How To Avoid Road-Rage Related Accidents

Posted on

Some road rage incidents defuse without much damage while others escalate into ugly incidents. If you don't know what to do, then a road rage incident between you and another motorist can quickly escalate and even result in an accident. Here are a few tips for preventing that from happening:

Don't Respond

You need to do everything in your power to decelerate the situation, and not escalate it. Ignoring the aggressor is a powerful way of doing this. Mind your own business; don't try to stare down the aggressor, give them the finger, try to overtake them, or do anything that may just anger them more.

Get Away From the Aggressor

Another useful tip is to get away from the aggressor if the situation allows. There are different ways of doing this. For example, you can slow down and let them pull ahead, you can take an alternative route or you can even switch lanes. If neither of those options is possible, then look for a safe parking spot and park; most aggressors will give up when it comes to that. A word of caution here: stay in public or crowded places; don't opt for deserted side roads that may encourage the aggressor's actions.

Apologize

There is no excuse for assaulting other road users, even if they are driving too slow/fast, cut in front of you, or refuse to give way. However, such actions may infuriate other road users who are already dealing with their own problems. Therefore, if you have done something that you think might have angered the other driver, it's best to apologize. Of course, you also need to adjust the behavior that might have triggered the rage in the first place. Don't get out of the car to make your apology; a simple wave of the hand may be enough to do the trick.

Drive to the Nearest Police Station

Despite your best efforts to mitigate the situation, the aggressor may continue with their aggressive actions; some people don't just give up. In such a situation, it's best to let the authorities handle the issue. Therefore, if you know of a nearby police station, drive into it and explain the situation (the other motorist isn't likely to follow you there). If you don't know of the nearest police post or if it is too far, then call 911 and the nearest patrol car will respond to your distress.

In case you are involved in a road rage crash, you still need to prove that the other motorist is liable for your damages while pursuing your claim. If the other motorist is charged with a crime related to the incident, you may use the accusation as evidence in your car accident case.
